My late father Charles Frederick Yarnold was born in November in the year of 1907 and died in March 1956. He earned the Burma Star medal as Platoon Sergeant in the Battle of Sittang 2nd Regiment with the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment. The other medals my father earned was the 1939-45 Star, Italy Star with Oak-leaf, Defence Medal, Victory Medal, King George V1 Coronation Medal and the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. My late mother arranged for the medals to be placed in the Sergeants Mess of the 1st Battalion in a glass case at The Duke of Wellington's Regiment Wellesley Park, Halifax West Yorkshire HX2 OBA In October 1985. It was not in my fathers’ nature to speak about his wartime experiences so I have found it very interesting that mention of him was made during the Battle of Sittang in February 1942 in an article from The Iron Duke Spring 1992 edition. Also it was very heartening to read on the BBC newspaper website August 2005 about the Memorial Service held in England that Prince Charles marks VJ Day in London and led a national commemorations service marking the defeat of Japan in World War II sixty years ago. Alongside that news item was the link to the Burma Star Association which I had not known about. After reading some of the Burma Star Association website pages I feel very grateful for the dedication and time that Paul Loseby gives to it and the Honour he gives to the Men and Ladies of the Burma Star Association.
