STUART THOMSON Son Alastair Thomson writes:
I'd be most grateful if you would add a name to your site since it is both more accessible and more specialist than the major "old comrades" sites - the bulk of which is, inevitably concerned with those who served in more recent conflicts. It is, I think, a significant historical record.
The name I'd like you to add is that of my late father, Stuart Thomson (1920-1978) who served as an NCO in the Intelligence Corps in India and Burma 1941-45 on the 'Y list' dealing with cryptography. He spent time at the Wireless Experimental Centre (Delhi) but was also attached at various times to 51 Wireless Intelligence Section; 'A' Special Wireless Group; 201 Special Wireless Section; 202 Special Wireless Section and 300/302 Indian Special Wireless Section. At least some of these were part of/linked to 4 Corps.
His war took him to Arakan Yoma; the Chin Hills; Manipur; the Naga hills and Pegu Yoma.
Because the Intelligence Corps is a specialist unit anyway - and because its Y service work was until after his death, a well-kept secret, I have not been able to discover very much of what he might have been doing with the exception of some references in Michael Smith's book (2000) The Emperor's Codes: Bletchley Park and the breaking of Japan's Secret Ciphers.
It is unlikely that any visitors to the site may have known my father - but if anyone has further insights into the units or work with which he was involved, I'd be delighted to hear from them. Thanks
