SGT. MAJOR LES (WILLIAM LESLIE) TAYLER
ESSEX REGIMENT  -  CHINDIT

Clive Harden writes:

Message:

Hi there I have been on this website a fair few times, but never posted a message until now. My Grandad who recently passed away, was a Chindit (and proud of it). His name was William Leslie Tayler, or Les to his mates. He joined the army in 1936 (age 16) and like so many lied about his age to join up and see the world.
He never talked about his wartime exploits much, so I never really pushed him, but like so many young men of his generation he answered the call and gambled his life, so people of my generation have a future, he attained the rank of Sgt Major and was in one of the Essex regiments.
I would very much like to hear from anyone who knew my Grandad, or indeed any old soldiers with their experiences. My grandad like so many other millions of men didnt win the VC or anything like that, but done his part. I never met a braver man than him....     Clive can be contacted on
