was originally a member of the 81st division West African Frontier Force

We did keep in touch for a few years when we ended our service, but what with moving houses and getting married letters were not replied to. GILBERT VICTOR BENNET - ROYAL ENGINEERS:- My father Gilbert Victor Bennett served in Burma during the second world war, he sadly died in 1964 aged just 43 after falling down stairs at his home. My mother said he always seemed to suffer with his health after leaving Burma but never told anyone what went on there or what he did. I have got a few pictures, a pewter tankard from the Burma Star Association with his name engraved on it, also an embroidered pocket patch which he used to wear on his jacket. He also had five different medals but they seemed to disappear. Years ago I made enquiries with the Burma Star Association and they seemed to believe that as he was a coal miner before he joined up for active service he may have been in a tunnelling unit with the Royal Engineers, and the 710 unit was mentioned, So what was a tunnelling unit for? Did anyone else, who may be reading this serve in a unit like this? or does anyone remember my father? At the moment I`m just in the dark, Hoping someone can help. Son Graham on Bmggbennett@aol.com
