L/CPL JOSEPH TYRRELL - SOUTH WALES BORDERERS - CHINDITS:- My Grandfather was a Chindit and we are all very proud of him.  He passed away a couple of years ago without telling us about a major part of his life, the usual comment was that he saw so many bad things that he could not talk about it to us.

However, he holds the Burma Star and other medals and we as a family are trying to put together the history of this great man.  We have found his service number and his name is Lance Coporal Tyrrell of the South Wales Borderers.

Can you please kindly advise me on where should I start.  We are aware that he was at one famous battle, the Battle of the Tennis Court.

Thanking you in advance for any help you can provide me.

Yours sincerely     Miss K Morris on Kimgjlifts@aol.com

LT JIM P SWAIN R.A. - 82ND WEST AFRICAN DIV:- Jim writes "Your Burma Star web site came up on my computer recently which pleased me greatly as I have had very little contact with the 14th Army veterans since 1947 (I left the UK in 1964).

I was in the Arakan with the 82nd West African Division from January 1945 and was on the road between Jallingup and Prome when the European war ended.  The official war history says the Japs had left the Arakan in April '45 but I can assure you that a few mortar shells were lobbed on to my OP position on the night before VE day (May).  My unit was the 1st W.A. Light Battery firing 18 pounders and I was mostly a forward observation officer.

Thank you for setting up your site but I suppose we are rapidly decreasing in numbers.  I am 78 and was one of the younger members of the team".

Jim now lives in Kingson Tazmania and the webmaster is writing for his permission to pass his address details on to anyone who may wish to contact him.  Jim also kindly also sent a cheque which has gone towards paying the Data Protection registration fees for this year - many thanks Jim
