ARTHUR ERNEST KIRBY POW - BELIEVED NORFOLK REGT:- Son in law Ian Schagen writes "My father in law was Arthur Ernest Kirby, born 10/1/20.  We believe he was a prisoner of war in the Far East during the Second World War, but he always refused to discuss his experiences.  He left no documentation, but we did find a Burma Star with other medals in his effects.  We do not even know which unit he was in, but as he came from Great Yarmouth, the most likely would have been the Norfolk Regiment.

I realise the information is very scanty, but would be grateful of your advice about any avenues we could pursue to find out more details about his war record.

SGT HARRY PERRY - CHINDITS:- I have recently came into possession of a magazine titled "The Chindits". it was produced for the Supreme Commander South-East Asia, in Calcutta, by the New Statesman Press. Published circa 1944. I received this from my uncle, Harry Perry ex-Sgt ex-Chindit, who has since passed on. The magazine itself has the front and back pages sellotape together and the internal pages are still legible and clear. The front page has a yellow lion to the right of the title and a picture of a group of men with mules in the jungle. Would like to know any details about ex-Sgt Harry Perry( from the east end of London) or if this magazine can be upgraded to a glossy version and who by. Many thanks John F Perry on wpne15085@blueyonder.co.uk

CHARLIE H. GOODRUM - 9th BTN ROYAL SUSSEX REGIMENT - 'The Shiney Ninth' :-

I'm writing on behalf of my grandfather Charlie H. Goodrum - He was in the 9th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment. He would love the chance to start writing to old friends, the only thing is he doesn't have a computer.
So I guess what I'm writing to say is if you know anyone that fought alongside him, that would like to write can you pass on my e-mail address so that I can  let them know where they can contact him.  Abi Weeks on mail@frogandtoad.com.au

SGT HARRY OATES - 1st & 2nd Btns DUKE OF WELLINGTON REGIMENT:-

Looking for anyone who knew my father - Harry Oates of the Duke of Wellington Regiment 1st and 2nd battalion - known to have been in Column 76 and a sergeant in Burma during 1944-45.  He was born 1919, died 1979 and came from Sheffield.  His family always called him Roy so he may be known by that name.  He told a story about several soldiers dressing as locals, taking an elephant into the mess and faking the Indian rope trick.  meachem@lineone.net

Capt. EJR Davies - 130th FIELD REGT RA - DIED 3 MAY 1943 - BURIED RANGOON:-

CAPT DD TWEDDLE 16th FIELD REGT RA - DIED 10 OCTOBER 1943 - BURIED IMPHAL :- Roger Cook writes "I am writing the history of Amersham and Chiltern RFC www.chilternrugby.com. A continuing saga as you will appreciate with your website.

Two of our war dead, recently found on the commonwealth wargraves website are Capt. EJR Davies and Capt. DD Tweddle both with the R.A in Burma.

Davies died 3 May 1943 and is buried in Rangoon. He was with the 130th Field Regiment, being non military I have no idea what this means and cannot find any info on the website.

Tweddle died 10 Oct 1944 and is buried in Imphal. He was with the 16 Field Regiment. Do you have any information on what they might have been involved in while in Burma.

Thanks, Roger Cook on rcook@bechtel.com

SGT WILLIAM GEDDES - ROYAL ARTILLERY - CHINDITS - 160th FIELD REGT - 60th L.A.A.:-

Please could you help me find any information of my late Father SGT WILLIAM GEDDES
Service Number 843703
DOB 12/02/1917
Enlisted 30/01/1935
In 1939 Father was posted to 39 IF-D Regiment Royal Artillery at Helmeia Cairo
Left  Service 29/01/1957 after 22yrs.
Awarded 1939/1945 Burma Star, Africa Star, Defence Medal and War Medal.  I know that part of his time was spent under Brig. Mike Calvert, and that he ended his years at The Royal Hospital Chelsea and passed away April 1989.
I am anxious for any information I can get, especially if any former comrades remember him.  He was born and came from Glasgow so could have been known as Jock or Bill by his mates.  I am very proud to have had him as my Father, but unfortunately did not grow up with him and only discovered who he was two years after his demise.  Hope someone can help me.  Thankyou  Mrs. Jean. Charles Denis Shuttleworth (known as Denis). Royal Marines - 42 Commando RM:- I saw your website and was I wondered if you, or any of your contacts, could provide me with any information about my Uncle Charles Denis Shuttleworth (known as Denis).

He served in Burma with 42 Commando Royal Marines.  He died in action on January 31st 1945 on the Mayebon Peninsula - as far as I know. He was only 19 when he was killed and left few traces behind except some stories. None of my family really knew what had happened to him - who his mates were and what sort of action was he involved in for example.

So if you have any info about 42 Commando and even better, if there were still some folk about who remembered him, I'd be very grateful.

GERALD GEORGE YOUNG - ROYAL ENGINEERS:-

Marcus writes "It's just over 10 years ago now that my granddad died. We were very close and he was basically like a father to me, but he never really talked a great deal about his experience in Burma, with the royal engineers. I don't know if u have any information on anyone who served with him that may be alive, but i would be grateful for any feedback, regarding Gerald George Young.  I am also trying to find out how to visit the Kohima Memorial if anyone can help me.
Thanks, and keep up the good work,

ERIC DOUGLAS ADAMS - ROYAL NAVY TRANSFERRED TO 7th INDIAN DIV/1st BN QUEEN'S REGIMENT:-I wonder if you may be able to help me in finding any of my dad's comrades from Burma

My father was Eric Douglas Adams he was in the Royal Navy from 2nd June 1943 to 18th August 1944 when he was transferred to the Army. We believe that he was in the 1st bn Queens Regt, he was certainly in the 7th Indian Division, 14th Army and served in Burma and then as part of the British Occupation Army in Siam (Thailand).

He was born on the 9th Oct 1924 in Bethnal Green, East London and died in March 1976.

I have photographs of him and men he served with in Bangkok during 1946/47. Some men are named and include Lt Williams Q.M., Sgt Jones, Sgt Woodhouse and L/Cpl Buckwell.

The attached photograph was taken at the Sod Suey Photo Studio in Bangkok sometime in 1946/47, my dad is the Corporal on the left of the picture. The man on the right is Derrick (correct spelling) as I have another photo of him on his own and he has written on the back, “to my best pal Eric, Good Luck, Derrick.” I don’t know what Derrick’s surname  was or who the man in the centre is. Derrick was also a Corporal.

I also have pictures of the billets the Regt were stationed at in Siam – at Sungei Patani as well as more pictures of soldiers but without any names.

I have a Japanese standard Army issue sword which dad brought home. I also used to have a Japanese Mimbu pistol, but I can’t find it now. I also have two copies of the Regt newspaper – The Lambs Tail, although I haven’t looked at them for years.

It would be great if I could find any of my dad’s old comrades.

Many thanks Keith Adams on keith.adams@revenue-plus.com
