After Burma he was sent on a draughtsman training course at Poona until being finally stationed in Singapore from 20th January 1946 until 6th December 1946.

Finally released from the R.A.F. on 27th May 1947.

My father would, if possible like the opportunity to find any comrades he was with in #261 squadron. Some of the information below may be incorrect but it was an awfully long time ago, so here are some of the names he has given me:

  • Warrant Officer "Barney" Barnes – in charge of ground crew
  • Pilot Officer Meridith – Australian
  • Flying Officer McDonald – Scottish
  • Commanding Officer Kazman

Also: Fletcher, Newman, Truman, Thomlinson

I have found information on the internet about Frank Woodrow. Even though my father does remember a Canadian pilot with blond hair he cannot remember his name. He has expressed a wish to contact Frank Woodrow or if possible for him to get in touch.

BERT BRIDGES - ROYAL ARTILLERY:-

I am making an enquiry about my father Bert Bridges, we don't have much information at all I am afraid, my father died when I was 16yrs old, and we miss him terribly, our family now live In Australia, and we are trying to find Dads' past that he rarely spoke of. From what we have found is that he served for the Royal Artillery we don't know which one, it was in Burma, and we know that he was awarded the Burma star and others, but unfortunately all have been lost, If anybody has any information on him we would be so very grateful, it means so very much to us to be able to learn of his past. Thank you and very much appreciated.

Yours faithfully   Amanda Gillespie. & family.       P.S We do know that his brigade was wiped out, he survived due to hospitalisation for ulcerated legs and malaria. hopefully info might help. E-mail:  marshracing@hotkey.net.au

ERNEST ALBERT MANNERS - 23rd INDIAN DIV - ROYAL ARTILLERY:- I am searching for information about my father Ernest Albert Manners (dob 30.08.1913) and his time in the army during World War II.

The information I have is very patchy.  I do not have his army number or the name of his regiment but I do have 4 medals one of which is the Burma Star.  They are still in the original box in which they were delivered and the ribbons have never been attached.

The medals were sent to:-
Mr. Ernest Manners
10 New Road
Penshurst
Kent

I also have 24 photographs which he took during the war, some of which have the surnames of the men pictured written on the back together with dates.  From the information on the photographs I believe that my father was in Whatou in 1943 and Imphal in 1943/1944.

My father never spoke about the war.  I really want to find out where he was and what he was doing during the war and would love to contact anyone who may have served with him.

From information from my family I believe he may have been a driver although he never drove after the war.

Some of the surnames listed on the back of the photographs are:-
Lancaster, Clark, Dale, Ildrich, Captain Mason, Major Hutton, Lieutenant Rice, Captain Connor, Major Slim, The Bish, Lieutenant Smith, Bbr. Searle, Dvr Scott, Burke, BSM Kinsford, Welsh, Day, Brady, Haggar, Lt Sleight, Marney, Dodd, Arkle, Brisker, Aston, Jarvis, Kirman, Peck, Winter, Musson and
Duffy.

I hope you are able to help or point me in the right direction.  I know that I can contact the MOD but they have told me it would be much easier if I had his army number or at least the name of his regiment.

In the photographs of him in uniform there the letters RA are attached to the lapels of his shirt (possibly Royal Artillery) and on top of the sleeves of his shirt is sewn a badge with appears to be some sort of bird (a bit like a peacock without feathers) (ed - now established as 23rd Indian Div)

Thank you in advance.

Jean Cooke (nee Manners) on BJNK1@aol.com

FRANK VICTOR OUTLAW - RAF:

I would be grateful if anyone could give me some information about my father, Frank Victor Outlaw, and his role in the Burma campaign. He died in 1969 when I was only 7 years old, so I never had a chance to talk to him about his war experiences. My mother is still alive but says that he never really spoke to her about Burma, all that she knows is that he was in the RAF and worked as a navigator. If there is anyone out there who remembers him, knows his regiment, or can give any information at all about him, I would be very grateful.

With thanks in advance, Richard Outlaw on routlawuk@yahoo.co.uk

CHARLES JOSEPH (Joe) STIRLAND - HMS PEMBROKE:- Daughter Pauline writes "My father CHARLES JOSEPH (Joe) STIRLAND served on HMS Pembroke from 1941.

He was awarded the Burma Star amongst other medals. My daughter and I are now tracing our family history and we would love to hear from anyone who knew my father. Sadly, he died in 1987 and as he did not talk much about his experiences during the War, it is now hard for us to put together a picture of his life. As we live in Australia, my daughter only met her grandfather once, just before he passed away. Any assistance would be appreciated."  Pauline can be contacted on p.williams@mailbox.uq.edu.au

'TAFFY' MORRIS, PAUL SWANSON & 'TINY' TYLER - 2nd BN QUEEN'S ROYAL REGT/CHINDITS/ESSEX REGT:- Taffy writes "

Enquiry re Paul Swanson who served with the 2nd Battalion, Queen's Royal Regiment (Chindits) and also "Tiny" Tyler who was also with the 2nd Battalion, Queen's Royal Regiment, although I believe he was commissioned into the Essex Regiment.  I went on leave with him for the week-end to see the Taj Mahal in Agra.  This would be sometime in 1944.

I would be most interested in finding information on others who served with the 2nd Battalion, Queen's Royal Regiment, which was commanded at that time by Colonel Du Valon, he was from the Channel Islands.  These names come readily to mind but there may be others I will think of later.  I served with these officers, hence my interest.

As a matter of interest, some years ago, I bumped into Jim Comrie who is living in Vancouver and he was one of the liaision RAF officers with our column.

"Taffy" Morris
now resident in
Toronto, Canada and on smithmorris@sympatico.ca
P.S.  I would also be very interested to hear from anybody who served with the 2nd Battalion, Queen's Royal Regiment who was with the Unit during the training period in Jhansi.  I believe this would be in the Central Provinces, India.  The C.O. was Colonel Du Valon and the Brigade Commander was Prowne, his initials I do not recall.
