GEORGE MANSFIELD - 6th BN SOUTH WALES BORDER REGIMENT:-Granddaughter Nicola writes "I'm currently looking into my grandfather's service in Burma. He never talked much about his time over there but I know he served with the 6th Battalion South Wales Borderers. His name - George Mansfield, he left for India in Oct 42, hoping that he wouldn't have left as soon as he did as he missed my mother being born and didn't see her until she was about 18 months old. I know he caught malaria whilst over there which was to flare up on a few occasions whilst home. He has the Burma star, the 1939-45 star, the 1939-45 defence medal and the 39-45 General service medal. He died 29.3.98.

Nicola writes "the only person we can definitely recall him talking of was Lt.Col.Cresswell

At present all I know is that George Mansfield enlisted on 24.7.40, that he completed training with wireless, as a driver and gunnery training. He sailed for India in 1942 and remember him talking of Rangoon, Mandalay and Poona.

He developed malaria whilst in Burma. He talked of how the men would be soaking wet for days on end and that they had these big leaved plants which they would sometimes sit underneath and shelter from the rain, hardly daring to move on occasion for fear of being spotted by the Japanese. I think he returned home sometime in 1945 and had been shot.

If anyone has any details about him or his battalion, please contact me on nicola@federal.co.uk

SGT SANDY (ALEXANDER) RANKIN - KING'S OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS - CAMERONIAN HIGHLANDERS:- Sandy's grandson writes "I am trying to use the net to find out what happened to my Grandfather. I think he may have been attached to a Gurkha Unit, as a Kukri knife was one of the souvenirs he brought back from wherever it was he was serving.

I, and my Family would be extremely grateful for any information as to where and when he had served there, due to the recent passing of my grandmother, which left us all empty. This is why I am asking anyone who knows what he did during the 39 - 45 war as we didn't even know he earned any medals until after his death in 75. Which I was left to remind me of him.

But I would have remembered him without his medals....

I would also like to find out about a friend of Sandy's - Andrew Nesbit who I believe served with my Grandfather.

Update - 06/04/2001

To date we have discovered that he had been a POW held in Java but he was being transported from Ambon to Surabay in South Indo China.  William was killed on 29th November 1943 whilst on board the Suez Maru which was hit by a torpedo when attacked by the USS Bonefish.  From Ron Martini we discovered ""Hits were seen and stern down. 546 POW's were in hold number 4 where torpedo hit.
