ALFRED HENRY WARR - ROYAL ARTILLERY/11th GLOUCESTERS/DORSET REGT:- Daughter Linda Hetherington writes "

Re: Mr Alfred Henry Warr
Date of Birth: 12 Dec 1907
Army Service No. 1787605
Enlisted 14.4.41

My father served in Burma during the war and has the Burma Star. He initially joined up with the Dorset Regiment and was 'kitted out' at Headingly Cricket Ground in Yorkshire.  He did his initial training in Blackpool and joined the 11th Gloucesters although he did go back to the Dorset Regiment.  He recalls being on the Manapur Road at the time when Vera Lynn visited the troops at being in Forward HQ at some point.

He is now resident in a Nursing Home in West Sussex, having spent most of his life in London.  He married my mother, Alice, in 1936 and they were together for 62 years.  She died in 1998.

I would love to have any news of his regiment.  I am his only child.  I believe he spent the majority of his service in the Royal Artillery.  I made contact with the Burma Star Association and SSAFA during 1998 and they were most kind.

He had a brother Thomas Reginald Warr who was also in the Far East, and a POW.  He sadly died some years ago.

Hoping that there may be some news.

Yours sincerely

Linda Hetherington bob@deaconscourt.fsnet.co.uk

SGT (LATER LT) CHARLES WIGGINS - 2nd BN KING'S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY / BURMA DIV:- Geoff Wiggins writes "

My father Charles Wiggins was a sergeant (later promoted Lt) with 2nd Bn KOYLI stationed at Maymyo, Burma.

He served with the 2nd Bt KOYLI in Burma from 1/4/1937.  Following the terrible and disastrous battle with the Japanese at the Sittan River in Southern Burma (and probably other battles) was part of the BURDIV'S withdrawal from Burma to India in May 1942.

My mother and I (aged 8 months or so) were evacuated from Maymyo by the RAF to a Northern  Indian hill town called Ranichet.

Afterwards my father was posted to "Calabria Military Camp" (or some place which sounds like that) Bombay, India where he was predominately  stationed until the end of the war.  He and his family (now wife and 3 children) were repatriated to England in 1947.

During 1956, my father and the family emigrated to Australia where during 1961 he died at Perth, Western Australia aged 52.

Prior to his death, he mentioned to me about all the hardships suffered by  KOYLI survivors.  He suffered from malnutrition and malaria like many others from the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.
