To Whom It may Concern

Re: Matthew Rutter

My father served with the "Chindits" but like everything I have read few are willing to talk about it.

His details are: -

Rank:                Private
Number:            3453408
Regiment:        1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers - 50th Column

My father said the unit was comprised of 1st Staffordshire; 1st Lancashire Fusiliers; 3rd & 6th Gurka Regiment: 1st Kings (Liverpool)

He fought for the regimental boxing team as "Bantam" of "fly" Weight whilst in India (sometimes called the mighty atom) and had a pet bull dog or bull mastiff.

I think he also new John McCann.

He died at Broughton House (Salford) 2nd July 1994 but he did manage to recall some names which he wanted to tell me about.  I have read some of the accounts and may be able to help in some areas.

SGT RUPERT (RUBE) ERNEST MAYNE - 82nd WEST AFRICAN DIV: Rupert's grandson Keith writes "

My father is trying to trace any information on his father (my grandfather), Rupert Ernest Mayne, All I have are two scraps of paper.  One says " Serg. R E Mayne  82nd Division, Royal West African Field Forces, Africa.     Saw Rube on Thursday April 27th 1944."  Rube was my grandfathers nickname.
The other would be dated sometime around 1925 I think, which says "3234198 R E Mayne 'C' Company  1st Batt.  Cameronians, S.R.  Shanghai Defence Force, China".
From your website (and other sources), I gather shortly after May 1944 the 82nd division was sent to fight in Burma.
If there is anything you can tell us or know where we can find service records etc. I would be grateful.  If this is the correct place (website) to ask, could you please add this name to your search Request website in the hope that someone remembers Rube.  Many Thanks for your time,
                                                                                                                     Keith Mayne on Keith.Mayne@care4free.net

DEVONSHIRE REGIMENT:  Killed at Mandalay on 4th March 1945.  Nobby's son John writes "I wonder if any of the members of the Burma Star or anybody reading this can help me. I am trying to get any information about my late father during his service in Burma .

My father ( "Nobby" Clarke) was killed in action during the attack on Mandalay on 4th March 1945 . My mother is now dead and did not wish to speak about Burma so I am the only one who can carry on the search.

I have a notebook that my father had with him whilst in Burma and I have abstracted the following information from the notebook of the persons serving together with my father at least up to January 1944:

In January he was in the 6th Bn.

January 1944 6th Bn Devonshire Reg. No. 4 Det.

GWILLYM JONES - STAFFORDSHIRE REGIMENT:- Gwillym's granddaughter Tanya writes "I am writing on behalf of my grandfather - Gwillym Jones who served in Burma during the second world war. I believe he was in the Royal Staffordshire Regiment. Although I can't find this on your site. He may have been in another regiment.

He was conscripted in 1940 and trained in northern Ireland. Before being put on The Coventry bound for Durban - from there he transferred ships and went to India before being on active duty in Burma.

I would be interested in tracing any surviving members of this regiment so that my grandfather could write to them. If you require further information please contact me.

My grandfather was recruited in HOLYWELL in Flintshire in 1940.

Tanya can be contacted on Tanya.Wright@ogilvy.com

6967253 CAPTAIN W.T.T.H. WHITE -  81st WEST AFRICAN DIV / RWAFF / 6(W.A.) BRIGADE(Intelligence Officer)/ ROYAL INISKILLING FUSILIERS: Capt. White's daughter Katy writes "I'm attempting to trace my father's whereabouts during the war as he was reluctant to divulge that information when he was alive. He was originally in the T.A.'s when war broke out and then spent time in both Ireland and Scotland and then commissioned into the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He was later seconded to the Royal West African Division and served as a Captain in the RWAFF.  He was also the Intelligence Officer for the 6(W.A.) Brigade.

Finally he was demobbed in 1947 as a Major.

Please did anyone know my father or knew anything about him? He did finally get round to writing about his experiences but died just a week later in the Royal Masonic Hospital in 1990. I will be grateful for any information".

Having had the last few days to ponder it all I hope that the following information may help jog some memories.  Some may be irrelevant but I know Dad did keep in touch with some of his old army pals.  I've now discovered that the emblem of his regiment was a spider which is the 81st Division.

My father was living in London at the outbreak of the war and was a member of the Territorial Army.  I know he was in Burma right up to the end of the war.  When the war ended he moved to Tangier in Morocco and then Ghana where he worked for the Bank of West Africa.  During this time he was awarded the O.B.E.

We all returned to England in 1965/66 and lived in Kent (near Faversham and Canterbury) until 1985.  My parents then moved up to Shrewsbury.  My father died in the Royal Masonic Hospital in London in 1989 (not 1990 as I quoted before).

Up until his death my Dad was an active member of the Burma Star Association, The Royal British Legion and also did voluntary work for S.S.A.F.A. both in Kent and Shrewsbury.

Do hope some of this info. helps!

Katy is contactable on okf.muscliff@cwcom.net

TONY GORDON - REME - Burma from 1941: Tony's daughter Zara writes "My Father, Tony Gordon, left North Africa to join Wingate in Burma in 1941, he was 19. He was part of REME but I believe also the 14th. He rarely talks of his experiences in Burma and it was years before he would fly again - I think the mules kicking out the side of the gliders had something to do with this! We live in St Albans, Hertfordshire and like many searching to find out what hell these brave men went through, I too would be grateful if anyone remembers him".

Tony can be contacted via Zara_Gordon@itv.co.uk

EDWARD EAST - BRITISH COMMANDO: Edward's Great Nephew writes "I am Edward East's great nephew, Simon White. My Great Uncle Eddie is still with us, he is not looking for any old comrades but I myself was looking for information on his time & my Grandfathers time in Burma & accounts of what happened. I have heard some stories & the above information is all I have at present. My Great uncle is still alive in England now in his eighties. I thought that I would put his name & what information I have in case one of his comrades recognised his name and perhaps wanted to contact him, they can do this through myself if they wish to providing my Uncle is responsive to the request.  Edward was from a town in Essex called Maldon on the river Blackwater if this helps anyone. He is one of 6 brothers all of whom but one served in other theatres of the war, all of whom returned safely".
Simon is available on psi_fan@yahoo.com

JAMES/JIMMY/JIM OR CHALKY WHITE - Unit/Regiment not known at this time:  Jim's Grandson Simon writes "

My grandfather was in Burma in the regular army I do not know what regiment he was in, his name was James White AKA Jimmy, Jim or Chalky. My Grandfather died at age 39 & sadly I never knew him. However If anyone knew my Grandfather James White & have any stories or information about him it would mean a great deal to me to hear them.

He grew up in the East End of London but I believe was living in Maldon where he met & then married my Grandmother who was with the A.T.S. He was a stocky robust but no means overweight man standing at about 5 ft 7 inches tall, brown hair. This is all the information I have to date, thank you so very much. Thank you. psi_fan@yahoo.com

ABLE SEAMAN BILL (BUNTS) STOCKER - SIGNALLER ON LCT 2231: Bill's son Dex writes "

On behalf of my dad Bill (Bunts) Stocker I am trying to trace any old comrades that may remember him. He served as a Signaller on LCT's and I think was based in Calcutta from 1943 - 45.
Dad was on LCT 2231 attached to the 120th LCT flotilla and saw action in Burma.
He holds a Burma Star though I don't know any details. It was only today (and I am 46) that I learned he had actually served and come under fire. He was always reluctant to talk of certain aspects of the war.

I am available on wolfrunner.dex@ic24.net
