NORMAN LAMBERT - KINGS OWN (LIVERPOOL) REGT - CHINDITS (1st Expedition) - PARACHUTE REGT

Malcolm Bowstead writes about his uncle "He was, I believe, in number eight column (17th Platoon). In this same unit were Sergeant Tommy Quick and Corporal Walsh (from Manchester), Birch, Suddery (from London - Islington), Gardiner , Atkins, the Platoon dog Judy".  I am trying to find out more about his life during that period and would appreciate any help.  I am contactable through malcolm.bowstead@ntlworld.com

NOTE:- Malcolm has since written to say that Norman enlisted on the 3rd April 1940 and served some time with the Parachute Regiment.  He was due to be parachuted into Malaya but the Japanese surrendered before this became necessary.

His Release Leave Certificate has two stamps, one that shows
'O Coy' 79 Battalion  4 Mar 1946 (It looks like an 'O' the ink is rather faded) under the heading 'Unit Overseas or UK Stamp'.  The other under 'Military Dispersal Unit Stamp' that shows 'Military Dispersal Unit No.2 - 5 Mar 1946  - York'

Sadly my dad died three years ago. He told me a lot about his time with the Gurkhas - of whom he was immensely proud, but I would like to try to find as much as possible about his army career. I am unsure of the dates but would guess it to be around 1940-45 ??. I do know he was in Burma and had the rank of Captain (acting Major). If anybody could help I would be most grateful.

JOHN 'TOPPER' BROWN(E) - ROYAL NORFOLK REGIMENT:

I am currently researching my family tree and urgently require information about my grandfather who I believe served in the Royal Norfolk Regiment. His name was John 'Topper' Brown/e and joined the regiment in Bangalore where he was resident. His daughter ( my aunt )tells me that little is known about him as he died in Singapore? from a torpedo after hitching a lift from an American ship.

I realise that this is a 'long shot' but is the name familiar to you? He attained the rank of Sergeant and joined up in 1939. I believe that he would have been about 33 yrs old.

If you do have any information then I would be very interested in hearing from you.
Yours Sincerely,
Nathan Browne Nathan.Browne@arup.com

Colour Sergeant 3449520 James Whittaker of The Lancashire Fusiliers:- Grandson Craig writes "

I am looking for information on my Grand Father if any of your members can help, I would be grateful.

I have received his records from the MOD, which states that he served in the India campaign from 03.12.41 to 27.08.45.

He received The Burma Star and also was 'Mentioned in Despatches', for what though I do not know. I have received information today that this was printed in the 'London Gazette' on the 2nd Feb. 1944, so I am presuming his act of bravery was in 1943.
I can tell you he was posted to the 10th Battalion in 1940, after being in the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment in 1939.

When he went to the India Campaign he was a lance Sergeant, then Acting Sergeant in March 1941, a War Substantive Sergeant from August 1941 and then Colour Sergeant and Company Quarter Master sergeant in Jan. 1945.

Sadly he died in 1974 and the only time my Father can remember him talking about the war was when 2x Gherkas turned up at their house when my Dad was a small boy. Sadly my Grand Father never talked again about his time during the war.

He was also with the BEF from 14.04.40 to 07.06.40.

If anyone knows anything about my Grand Father, I would be grateful to hear from them at craig@craigwhittaker.freeserve.co.uk
