This is the start of , I feel a long search, and any help would be most
appreciated. I have no pictures of my father in uniform, but have enclosed
one taken just before the war along with Sommerfield (with moustache),
mentioned below. Detail is almost non-existent but here goes.
Joseph Robb, born and raised in Glasgow, joined the Royal Artillery and
became a prisoner at the fall of Singapore. He was on the railway and other
than the odd bit of information I managed to force out of him when I was a
teenager, he never talked about his experience. He went to school (Hillhead
Academy) with a man who was known to me as uncle Sommy. His surname was
Sommerfield. Amazingly they ended up in the same camp and stayed together
till their return to Scotland. Uncle Sommy saved my father's life in the
camp by carrying him to "work" each morning as his legs were badly damaged.
After the war, Sommerfield returned to Thailand as the far east manager for
J & P Coates, the thread maker. He spent the rest of his working days there
and visited our family whenever he returned on leave.
My father had no contact, other than Sommerfield, with anyone or
organisation to do with that time. My mother knew as much as I do and as she
has now gone, I feel it important to find out more of this dark period. Any
contacts would be most welcome .
