LEONARD CHARLES PALMER
R.A.S.C. - 149 TRANSPORT COMPANY

Dear Sir, you maybe able to help me. My name is Leonard Charles Palmer and my RASC no was T/14740050.(I am now 80 years old)

I was enlisted in the army in April 1944 and by August 1944 I was shipped to India and on landing was immediately transported to the Indian/Burma border on the Chittagong River. The name of the company was the 149 Transport Company. Our duties at the time, was the loading of supplies on to Dakota's for dropping to  the 14th Army who by then had the Japanese on the run. The company was attached to the SEA command and subsequently to the Chindits.

I have in my possession a copy of the SEAC SOUVENIR NEWSPAPER and the Chindits. I don't want to claim anything that I may not be entitled to, but would I not in these circumstances be eligible for the Burma Star?. I realise that my task and that of the company as a whole was easy as the hard slog had  already been done and the 14th Army were advancing rapidly through Burma.

After a few months the company was ordered to take the vehicles and drive back through India eventually finishing up in Bombay, after a brief stay in Lalitpur. Here we were along with thousands of other Regiments and Corps to train for the invasion of Singapore. The bomb was dropped and the Japs surrendered. The company eventually went into Singapore as a peace operation.

Also how can I get in touch with any of the drivers who were in that campaign in that company. Thanking you in anticipation of a reply. Len Palmer on  lenpop@chariot.net.au
