JOHN (JACKIE) MOORE
BLACK WATCH - CHINDITS - ARGYLE & SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS & SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS
10th October 1924 - 8th August 2002

John joined the Army on the 15th April 1943 in Glasgow.  He was in the Black Watch and on the 23rd February 1644, joined the Chindits for the 2nd Chindit Expedition.

On the 25th September 1947 he was demobbed but despite head injuries from shrapnel, wanted to stay in the Army as a regular soldier.  He re-enlisted three weeks later (13th October) joining the Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders.

John was posted to Malaya on the 8th April 1948 and adjoined the Seaforth Highlanders and served with them until his return to the UK on the 1st April 1951.

Thirteen months later, John was posted to Germany but in August of 1952, after his wife had a stroke, he returned to Scotland.  He then left the Army in February 1953, being discharged to Fort George at Inverness.

John returned to his previous employment in the colliery and worked in various pits in Fife before moving to London in 1962.  He stayed there for five years but in 1967 returned to Scotland and made his home at Rosyth where he worked in the dockyard.

Due to poor health, John took early retirement in 1987 and moved to Glenrothes in 1990.  He lived there with his wife Cathie and daughter until his death on the 8th August 2002.

During his service, John Moore was awarded the following medals:-

1939/45 Star
War Medal 1939-45
Defence Medal
Burma Star
General Service Medal with clasp (Malaya)

(The information was taken from John's Army Service Record and Pay Book)

If anyone remembers John (Jackie) and could give daughter Pat any information about him from those war time years, could you please contact her on jon_leah@hotmail.com

A WEE MAN WITH A BIG AND BRAVE HEART

At John's funeral, his nephew in full Black Watch uniform, piped 'The Flowers Of The Forest' at his graveside.  If my Dad was watching, he would have been as proud as punch.........Pat
