WALTER (WAL) MALTPRESS
1st Essex Regt at Tobruk
1st Beds & Herts from 19/11/41
Chindits

I am tracing my late fathers military history and am trying to contact anyone who knew him. His name was WALTER (WAL) MALTPRESS. Service number 6025329.

He served in the 1st Essex Regt from 24/6/1940, embarked for Egypt 29/8/1941, and served at TOBRUK, where he transferred to the 1st  Beds and Herts 19/11/1941. He was in INDIA by 29/3/1942, calling in at Durban on route for India. While he was in India he was batman to CAPT. TONY NORFOLK

In September 1943 he started his CHINDIT training. He was in 16 or 61 Column, (I think 61) and Capt Norfolk stayed in India at Brgd. H.Q. Dad flew in to ABERDEEN and stayed in BURMA until Brgd. moved back to India. He was in the British Military Hospital, Bangalor 2/1/1945 until 1/2/1945 with Typhus fever and Malaria.

Dad left India 2/5/1945 on the Empress of Australia, aft deck, upper port side, cabin 334, berth 3. He arrived in Liverpool 11/6/1945 and spent the last seven months of his service at Bury St Edmunds as part of the Personnel Selection Team under Capt. R. Watson.

During his time in India and Burma dad's best friend was TOM CHALLIS.    I would like to find TOM CHALLIS and Capt. TONY NORFOLK or their families, and anyone who thinks they may have known my father.

The photo shows TOM CHALLIS on the left and WAL MALTPRESS on the right.
There is now a web site with pictures of Walter www.andymaltpress.info

You can email Walters son Andy at andymaltpress@btopenworld.com
