THE LONE CHINDIT
by
D.H. Donaldson
Doug's book was published in 1967 by Robert Hale Ltd (
and very limited they appear to have been as they did not even know of the
Burma Star Assoc.)
AUTHORS NOTE
During the 1939-1945 World war, the Commonwealth Long
Range Penetration Battalions fighting in Burma behind the Japanese lines were
given the name of "Chindits"__ after the Chinthey, the mythological creature,
half lion, half griffin, images of which stand guard over Burmese temples to
keep of evil spirits.
To all Chindits --- alive or dead --- this book is
dedicated.
All the people and incidents in this book are
fictitious, but the places, the general background and the types of experience
are based on the actual situation then pertaining in Burma and are as nearly
accurate as the memory of a private soldier allows.
Peter Hendry writes:-
I know he once came back from patrol behind Jap
lines and was told to pick up new weapons and set off to ambush an enemy
force only to find out that the guns had not been degreased and the bullets
didn't make it up the barrel so it was grenades and knives time.
He was also at one point the only survivor of an
ambushed patrol and had to get back to base alone.
I have not had much chance to hear other memories as I
am married to his daughter and he doesn't want her to know too much about it
all.
I don't even know if he has received the medals
and pension he is due. He was with the Australian army, though he came from
Selkirk in Scotland. He now lives in Fort William having out lived his wife
Jean Donaldson who was also an author and who wrote Innocents to Everest (
about the family trip to Base Camp ) and Child in a Boarding House (about
her childhood in Ealing)
I'm not trying to sell books but if you want to
mention them on your site please do.
