History of the Burma Star Association

916417 L/Bdr/Ftr. Lihoreau R(Ron)
Later promoted to P/A/S/Sgt

Of the
343rd H.A.A. Battery R.A.

Son Tim is seeking information about his father who sadly passed away in 1992.  If you can help, could you contact Tim on tim.lihoreau@classicfm.com

Information discovered so far:

I have some details about regiments and army numbers, etc, but I don't know how useful/relevant they are.

1) what looks to me like Dad's call up papers requiring him to proceed overseas on the 9th December, 1940. It is addressed to

916417 L/Bdr/Ftr. Lihoreau R
343rd Hy.A.A. Battery R.A.

and is signed ( i think) E.W.Day, Major, R.A.
39770 Commanding 343rd Hy.A.A.Battery, R.A.

2)a letter (20th May '46) from the Army Pay Office, Great Central St, Leicester, ref. HAA/RELEASE/63351
and addressed to
916417 P/A/S/SGT. Lihoreau R.

3) his "Soldier's Release Book", stamped 26 April 1946 which includes the same army number and lists the "Unit Regt or Corps" as "53rd (FD) Holding Regiment R.A."

4) a letter of May 51from Major J.H.Eltringham, TD. RA. about the Annual Camp and a
roled in the Battery (refers to either Divisional Bombardment Office and Sound Ranging).
This has a last paragraph :
"By the way, I think I have met you before, as I was in Sierra Leone with
2(WA) H.AA.Regt at Hastings
and Kissi and later in the Far East with the Africans. I shall look forward to seeing you at camp and
talking of the ACR's."

Beyond this, I've just finished reading Dad's war diary which covers mainly the first half of 1944 before it stops.
Several places are mentioned including :
Chiringa (?), Champolati, Sakpong, Natanin Vaung (?), Letpan (?), Bawli, the R.Chaung (river?) and Pagoda Hill.

People mentioned include Burney, Vaughan, Watson and Hewitson. Part of one entry (Friday 7th April '44) says "Capt. Morgan to 3rd Bty to replace late Capt. Barnaby" (?). As our name suggest, my Grandad was French and Dad himself was studying French throughout the period of the diary. (in fact, it switches to French towards the end) Don't know if this might help on jog a memory.

Apologies for the vagueness. Dad died in 1992 and as a result am reliant on what he told me long ago and the little we have on paper.

Hope this is some use? Thanks again for such a quick reply.
Yours,
Tim Lihoreau
