The Burma Campaign Memorial Library

The Burma Campaign Memorial Library, a comprehensive collections of memoirs, histories, biographies, political and military analyses, essays, letters, fiction and poetry about the war in Burma from 1942 to 1945, was launched at the library of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in the University of London in the Spring of 1999.

Including journal articles, journal archives (including a full set of DEKHO!), personal papers and unpublished memoirs, the Library has been assembled from three main sources; donations from personal collections; books already on the shelves of the SOAS Library; and books purchased with the aid of a grant from the GB Sasakawa Foundation. Some Burma veterans have designated books in their personal libraries as bequests to go to the Memorial Library. Each donated or bequeathed book contains a bookplate inscribed with the name and service of its donor.

The search for material continues worldwide. It is expected that most of the 700 titles now in the bibliography will have been acquired by the date of the launch, but since new books are being written and hitherto unknown titles still being discovered, the Library will continue to grow after it is launched. Information, donated books and offers for purchase are all welcome. A list of books still being sought is available on request to the Burma Campaign Memorial Library Project, 5 Beechwood Drive, Marlow, Bucks 5L7 2DH. Members of the BSA will be admitted free of charge to the Library after it is launched. Details will be published in a future issue of DEKHO!
