William Griffin (husband of Joan nee Fowler) was a member of the Royal Air Force Voluntary Reserve serving in Singapore. When the City fell, William was captured and taken prisoner eventually being held in one of the POW camps in Java. On the 29th November 1943, 548 British and other prisoners were being transported from Ambon Island in the Moluccas across the South Java Seas toward Sourabaya in the Japanese ship, the SUEZ MARU. The Japanese intended to use the prisoners to construct airfields on the islands. At 6 degrees 20 minutes South - 116 degrees 30 minutes East, the Suez Maru was attacked by the US submarine Bonefish and hit by torpedo(s). As the Suez sank, one of her accompanying ships came to the rescue but no POWs survived - those who survived the torpedo attack were machine gunned whilst they were still in the water.
William
Griffin is named on the Singapore memorial column 4-27.
William's daughter Pat would love to find out more about her father and she can be contacted on Moosereen@aol.com
