GORDON GIBSON
Cameronian - Seaforth Highlander

Helen Gibson writes:-

My Dad, Gordon Gibson, was a "Terrier" (51st Division), who went to North India and Burma with the Seaforths..although I believe there was a bit of movement between regiments, so he may have been a Cameronian or a Gordon at some time. He died in July 2003, and spoke little about his service. It was something he did not like to dwell on, and apart from the deep, stinking mud, he only spoke of the enormous butterflies.  I often wonder about the day to day life of those men who were in Assam for so many years, and in Burma.

His best man (he and Mam were married in March 1942, just before he left for India) was a Jim? Farquhar from Caithness, and I often wonder if he or any of Dad's compatriots are alive. I would love to talk to them. I think he and Jim were the only survivors of an attack where Dad was very badly shot. They were posted missing, and my mother received a telegram on her 21st birthday, 2 years after their wedding...she had not seen him since a few days after they married. When he returned he was skin and bone, having spent a long time in the jungle, wounded, and subsequently in hospital in Burma. If there is anyone out there who recognises Dad's name, or knows of others who came from Caithness and fought there, I would love to hear from you.  hbg@ecosse.net
