George Henry Field (19.12.1921-20.09.2000)
RAF #952434 George served in the RAF from the 22nd February1940 to the 29th March 1946. He was for a time assigned to the 14th Army SEAC unit as a Radio Operator his squadron being the 142 Repair and Salvage Unit. He was stationed on an airstrip known as White City(coded *) in the middle of the jungle. There he took messages from two other operators in the field assigned with the army then relayed those messages to GHQ in India or if what was needed was at the airstrip he would arrange any airdrops. He did all this with the help of another soldier and I believe good friend Basher Bailes. I remember him telling us that the runway there was made by the soldiers using crates of bully beef which they were sick of eating. This was just one of the many anecdotes he passed on over the years. In 1945 he and his comrades were told to get out of the jungle as the Japanese were making their way down the country and the monsoon season was due to start, this was when he and 15 other soldiers started their trek through the Himalayas into China, a trek which took six weeks and quite a few lives.. It is with great pride that I choose to do this small and simple tribute to my Dad as I have always believed that he was proud of the fact that he had done 'his bit' during WWII... Dad! I can only imagine that you were a great soldier who fought for King and Country but I know you were a wonderful father who I dearly love and desperately miss, there will never be a day go by when you aren't in my thoughts. Forever in our Hearts Karen Anyone who may have known my Dad or wishes to contact me can send all correspondence to: Karen Harrison at karenh1962@icqmail.com
