RON COWARD
1922 - July 24th 2006

Ron was born in England 1922 and did part time military training from age 15 to 18 with the Ellesmere College contingent of the Officers Training Corps with at a boarding school in England called a Public School just to confuse the Americans.

In 1940 Ron was Sgt instructor to the 3rd Battalion Glamorgan Home Guard but then enlisted in Territorial Army as a volunteer.  He joined the Royal Artillery and in 1941 served in the 77th  HAA Regt RA (TA) and the 79th HAA Regt RA (TA).

In 1942 Ron was commissioned from 124 OCTU posted to 149(M)HAA Regt TA and subsequently drafted to REKOY to India.  In  October 1943 he was posted to 1 Mobile Anti-aircraft Regt RA at Ranchi, India then Chindwarra, India before posting to 66 (Leeds Rifles) HAA Regt RA (TA) at Digboi and Tinsukia on the Assam oilfields also near US supply base at Chabua from which supplies were flown to Chunking 'over the Hump'

When the 66th (Leeds Rifles) HAA RA was disbanded, Ron was posted to 6 Medium Regt RA on Ramree Island.  He was then promoted Staff Captain GSO3 HQ 15 Army Group RA in India 1945.

Ron Coward was released from the Army in 1946 but was placed on Z Reserve of Officers and recalled during the Cold War for 2 weeks HAA refresher training at Sheringham AA Practice Camp, Norfolk, England.

In 1948 having studied law, Ron gained an LlB (London) 1948 and in 1950 was admitted to the roll of solicitors [lawyers].  He went on to be admitted as a barrister and solicitor Saskatchewan and later the Solicitor-General of Bermuda in 1973.

Ronald A. L. Coward passed away on 24th July in Sidney. Ron is survived by his wife Patricia, daughter Sheila of Bermuda and son John of England. His son Peter predeceased him in 2004. Also surviving are son-in-law Stephen and grandaughter Laura of Bermuda as well as many other relatives and friends.

Ron was born in Lancashire, England and enjoyed a successful career as a solicitor which took him to Canada, Bermuda and the Channel Islands before retiring to Sidney in 1990.

Ron served in Burma and India during WWII. He had many interests and in recent years had devoted much time to family history research. He was also an active member of the local Burma Star Association. A private memorial, in accordance with his wishes, was held at 2.00 p.m. on Friday, 28th July at First Memorial Funeral Services, 4725 Falaise Drive in Royal Oak.
