helpful, especially unit movements or memories from men who remember these nine
lads.

Died 29th March 1945 in captivity
Believed to have been P.O.W in Borneo.

Killed in Action 2nd March 1942
Stronghold was S Class Destroyer lost escorting merchantmen to Freemantle when
engaged by Japanese force led by Cruiser Maya.

Lost in action during fighting with Japanese forces at the Maur River or on the
Scim River with 11th Indian Div.
The RE Museum is unsure which action or indeed which unit Garnet was attached
to.

Killed when Jeep he was travelling in hit a mine.
We were able to add Peter’s name to the Burgess Hill Memorial in Summer 1999
along with another “missing” name.

Part of 70th Div that became the Chindits.
45 Recce Regt opted to continue as Infantry.
Regt fought as part of Long Range Penetration Group (LRPG).
Regt later reformed as 2nd South Staffordshire Regt (to
replace that unit lost at Arnhem).

The Royal Corps of Signals
Died 8th September 1943
Had seen service in Norway in 1940. Served
in Singapore from October 1940 to the surrender.
Robert died of Malaria in captivity.
