ERIC BAILEY BALFOUR
ROYAL CORPS OF SIGNALS

My Grandfather Eric Balfour was a rubber planter in Burma when the Japanese invaded. He joined up and was part of the retreat to India. We believe that in India he was a cypher clerk attached to GHQ in Simla. We unfortunately don't know what unit he served with, or his Regimental number as he lost most of his possessions after the war.

He was forced to leave Burma after being attacked for the second time by Nationalists. He once described some of his experiences to me, but was reluctant to talk about them and didn't include useful details that might have helped trace his war record.

Sadly Eric died in Timaru, New Zealand on the 10th November 2001.

If anyone remembers him or can shed light on what units he might have served in, I would be extremely grateful to receive the information. Hamish Balfour on balfourh@yahoo.com
