EDWARD WILLIAM JAMES AVEY was born December 27th 1915 in Swanmore, Hampshire in England. On the 1st April 1940 Edward enlisted as a Private into the Royal Indian Navy Voluntary Reserve (RINVR). By March 1946 he had distinguished himself, being awarded the King's Commendation For Brave Conduct for his actions. He left the RINVR at that time having risen through the ranks to Major. Edward's dog tag (Identity discs) bore the details T174664 (Baptist). We know that he served aboard the Union Castle Line's H.M. Troopship 'Windsor Castle' (click link to learn about the HMT Windsor Castle) around 1941 and that he received:- Battle of Britain 1939-1945 Star Pacific Star with Burma clasp Silver Laurel Leaves (King's Commendation) Defence Medal 1939-1945 War Medal with Oak Leaves On the 23rd December 1943 in Madras, he married his American born Missionary nurse from Assam.
