Dear Mr Loseby,

I was interested to read your email, as some years ago we had contact with a man who was researching the deception units, one of which was deployed in the far east. These used ordinary unit titles to disguise there function, which was to broadcast the sound effects of military units in an effort to delude the enemy into reacting to or re-deploying forces against a perceived threat. This intern took them away from the area where a true attack was planned.

These units mostly used U.S built White Scout Cars, re-worked to carry large loud speakers which could project the sound of tanks on the move etc.

The Far East units latter modified the equipment to fit on jeeps. These units were so ‘hush hush’ that the researcher we knew of had grate difficulty gathering information on the 1990’s.

Deception units were involved in all theatres of war and were also involved in the deployment of dummy tanks, trucks, boats etc, but the ones with broadcast equipment were known as Sonic Defence Units.

I will try to look out our earlier correspondence on the subject and contact you again.

If you would like to make a donation to the Museum in return for this information we would appreciate a Sterling cheque made payable to 'REME Corps Account No. 2'.  Please send cheques to the REME Museum of Technology, Isaac Newton Road, Arborfield, Berkshire, RG2 9NJ, U.K.

And from Lt. Col. Mike Jackson (Intelligence Corps) we have:-

Light Scout Car Companies (LSC Coys) were very, very interesting units. Briefly - since I don't have much time at the moment - the name LSC Coy was a cover name for the then Top Secret Sonic Deception units. The role was to deceive the enemy into believing that military activity such as bridge building, tank movements, etc was taking place in an area which was catually very quiet. This, it was hoped, would cause the enemy (the Japanese in your father's case) to reinforce areas of their lines that did not need reinforcement, taking troops away from an area where the allies would launch an attack. LSC Coys employed US-made White Scout Cars and Jeeps fitted with the -then state of the art wire recorders and large stereophonic speakers to broadcast the appropriate recorded sounds. The personnel of the LSC Coys were Royal Engineers, Royal Signals and Intelligence Corps. But they had to eat - hence your father's membership of such a unit. No specific insignia was worn - your father wilol have worn conventional ACC badges (This was for security reasons). If this is of any help or interest, please get back to me. I have more information and I am sure that you have too!

Best wishes, Mike Jackson (Lt Col Intelligence Corps)
