Regt ANTI-TANK RA
The 221, 222, 223 & 224 (King's Own) Anti-tank Batteries in which Alexander Filer and Maurice Foulds served, were part of 56 (King's Own) Anti-Tank Regt RA (TA) formed in 1938 from the 4th King's Own TA. Most of the lads from the 222 Battery were from Barrow In Furness and were friends in civilian life as well as in the Army. Their war service was:-
1939-40 UK
21st April 1940 Shipped
to France
with BEF as part of 42 Division under the command of Lt. Col. B.H. Palmer.
They were equipped with 2pdr anti-tank guns. They moved into Belgium and
were in the Flanders area - this was at the start of hostilities and just
prior to the withdrawal to Dunkirk. During this time, the Regiment took quite
a mauling and 'Mac' Pedley one of the commanders was seriously wounded.
He did however recover to rejoin his group when they went out to the Far East.
1941 UK
In
1941, 222 ATk Bty RA (TA) went to the 83 ATk Regt for a month, after which
they returned to the 56th (King's Own) ATk Regt RA (TA), with which they
stayed until 1946 when the Regt was placed in Suspended Animation. India and
Burma 1942-1945.
