The 1st Indian Anti-tank Regiment
was formed in 1940 as the 'K' Anti-tank Regiment -it was given its number in
April 1941. The regiment was allocated to the 10th Indian Infantry Division
which went to Iraq in April 1941 and served there until May 1942 -it moved to
Persia and eventually ended up in Italy. The 1st Indian Atk Regt left the
division in May 1942 and judging from your query returned to India in Feb
1943. During 1943 Indian Atk and LAA Regiments were combined into a single LAA/Atk
Regiment with 2 LAA batteries and 2 Atk batteries. As such the 1st Indian LAA/Atk
Regiment was allocated to the 26th Indian Infantry Division which served in
Burma from January 1944 until May 1945. In 1945 the 1st LAA/Atk Regt was
enlarged and reformed as two separate regiments-1st Indian LAA and 1st Indian
Atk-both part of 26 Division. The LAA Regiment became part of IV Corps Troops
and the Atk Regt appears to have remained with 26 Div.
