1st PUNJAB REGIMENT

1st Battalion

Pre war regular battalion formed in 1922 from 62nd Punjabis.  At the outbreak of war in September 1939, the battalion came under command of the Landi Kotal brigade, Peshawar District.

Between January and April 1942, the battalion came under the command of 5th Brigade, 4th Division.  It left the Division following the retreat from Benghazi and was sent on a tour of duty at Giarabub.

The battalion joined 161st Brigade and under the command of 5th Division, took part in the main campaigns of 1944 and 1945.  The battalion was with the brigade during the battle of Kohima.  

2nd Battalion

Pre war regular battalion formed in 1922 from the 66th Punjabis.  At the outbreak of war in September 1939, the battalion was stationed at Multan under command of the Ferozepore Brigade, Lahore District.

The battalion came under command of 55th Brigade, 14th Division and was deployed to the Arakan with the Division in September 1942.  It fought throughout the first Arakan campaign.  The 55th Brigade remained in the Arakan when the rest of the 14th Division returned to India, then coming under command of the 26th Division.

The battalion then transferred to 123rd Brigade, 5th Division, and took part in the main Burma campaigns of 1944 and 1945. 

3rd Battalion

Pre war regular battalion formed in 1922 from the 76th Punjabis.  The battalion was under command of the 9th (Jhansi) Infantry Brigade at the outbreak of war.

The 9th Brigade sailed for the Middle East at the outbreak of war. When the Brigade arrived in Egypt, the battalion transferred to 5th Brigade, 4th Division.

The battalion took part in the East African campaign of 1941 under the command of 5th Brigade, 4th Division.

The battalion remained under command of 5th Brigade, 4th Division in the Middle East until January 1942.  By April 1945, was under command of 25th Brigade, 10th Division in Italy.
 

5th Battalion

Pre war regular battalion formed in 1922 from the 82nd Punjabis.  In September 1939 the battalion was stationed at Bannu as part of the Brigade there, under command of Waziristan District.

The battalion came under the command of 13th Brigade, which was sent to Burma in April 1941.  The Brigade then joined the 1st Burma Division when it was formed in July 1941.  The Battalion fought throughout the Burma campaign of early 1942, and came under the command of other units during the period.

After the Burma campaign of 1942, the battalion joined the 71st Brigade that came under command of 26th Division.  The date when the battalion joined the Brigade is not known, but it was after the first Arakan campaign.  The battalion fought with the Brigade until November 1944.

The battalion went with the Brigade when it was sent to Bombay to rest and retrain for an amphibious role.  The battalion returned to the Arakan with the Brigade in January 1945.  The Division was sent to Madras in preparation for the invasion of Rangoon in March 1945.  The battalion was with the Brigade when it landed near Rangoon in April 1945. 

6th Battalion

A war raised battalion, formed in Benares in August 1940.

The battalion came under the command of 44th Brigade, 17th Division.  However, the Brigade was sent to Singapore without the Divisional H.Q. in January 1942.  The battalion was captured with the fall of Singapore in February 1942.

 

7th Battalion

Battalion raised in Jhelum in April 1941.

8th Battalion

This battalion was formed in April 1941 in Jhelum.  In December 1941, battalion converted to become the :-

6th (1st Punjab) Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Indian Artillery

 

9th Battalion

Formed in June 1941 by the re-designation of the 11th Battalion.  In February 1943, battalion transferred to the Royal Indian Navy and disbanded.

 

10th Battalion (Regimental Depot)

The pre war regimental depot battalion formed in 1922 from the 84th Punjabis.  The regimental depot was located at Jhelum.  It had no active role during the war.

 

11th Battalion

The pre war territorial battalion based at Jhelum.  It was raised to active status in June 1941 and re-designated 9th Battalion.

 

14th Battalion

Raised in Jhelum in January 1942.

India.

 

15th Battalion

Raised in Jhelum in July 1942.

India.

 

16th Battalion

Battalion formed in August 1943 by the re-designation of the 25th Garrison Battalion.

Training battalion.

 

25th Garrison Battalion

Raised in Jhelum in August 1942.  Re-designated 16th Battalion in August 1943.

 

26th Garrison Battalion

Raised in Jhelum in March 1942.  Disbanded in 1943.
